Their defenders back off and back off - and who can blame them? Messi curls a shot towards the far post and only misses by mere inches. Moments later Lautaro Martinez and Messi play pinball in the Australia box but still can't find the third goal that would truly put this game to rest. Michael Dominski·Live ReporterDecember 3, 2022 at 3:51 PM ESTArgentina haven't convincedTake Messi out of it - and that's a ridiculous thing to say, because you can't - but look beyond his genius and Argentina haven't exactly shown much that would put the scare into the other sides left in the competition (if they do indeed hold on).
Argentina 2-1 Australia: World Cup 2022 StatsWorld Cup Dec 3, 2022 Lionel Messi’s quest for a World Cup title is still alive. Messi’s 1000th competitive career appearance was a perfect moment for arguably the greatest player in football history to score his first ever World Cup knockout stage goal. It only took him 24 shots across 791 minutes of action to do it, but it arrived before long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo was able to score a World Cup knockout stage goal (none in 514 mins & from 25 shots). Predict three questions correctly for a chance to win big! Available on every match. It was always likely to be Messi that broke the deadlock – after all, no player in history has scored the opening goal of a World Cup game more often (six).

Suddenly, Argentina look a little flustered - and Australia should actually be level. Behich surges inside from the left wing, gets into the box, ghosts past Otamendi and is only denied by a wonderful last-ditch tackle from Martinez. Moments later, Hrustic collects the ball off a corner and looks to curl one into the far top corner - he doesn't miss by much.

Yet, on the pitch the players are starting to show some nerves. Emiliano Martinez just booted the ball out of play from a goal kick and has started time-wasting too. FIFA has updated the goal to an Enzo Fernandez own goal - tough luck, Goodwin.

I suppose just about every team has shown frailties or shortcomings in this tournament, but Argentina have hardly put a marker down here. Michael Dominski·Live ReporterDecember 3, 2022 at 3:54 PM ESTTime running out for AustraliaI'm afraid it is Argentina who are looking the more likely to score again, not Australia. Martinez and Messi have both gone close, as Australia throw bodies forward. Australia themselves haven't really had a chance since just after they pulled one back.
Messi’s opener also took him past the late, great Diego Maradona for World Cup goals, with his ninth in the history of the competition. Only Gabriel Batistuta (10) stands in Messi’s way of the all-time Argentine World Cup record, but it must be said that Messi’s next World Cup appearance will mean that he’s played double the number of matches in the competition as the former national hero (24 vs.

A spin and shot in the box from Kuol and the 18-year-old comes so close to forcing extra-time and announcing himself on the world stage. Unfortunately for him, and fortunately for Argentina, Emi Martinez stuck out his left hand to make a wonderful save and thwart him.

Maybe that comes with having Messi on your team. Sam Lee·Manchester City CorrespondentDecember 3, 2022 at 4:06 PM ESTHow far can Messi carry this team? Well, at least we all got to see Lionel Messi score at least once more at the World Cup, then? The Netherlands were solid against the USA, but it will be an entirely different prospect when they are trying to defend against Messi. This Argentina side has flaws, no doubt, but they also have a once-in-a-generation talent who can pretty much win matches by himself. That is why they are genuine contenders to not only go very deep in the tournament, but to actually win it. Argentina vs Australia live updatesDecember 3, 2022 at 4:09 PM ESTBuenos Aires loves Emi MartinezPhew! That got close at the end but, in fairness, largely because Lautaro Martínez looks like he’s never seen a goal before. Messi did all he could to drag his team to a third goal, and he put two on a plate for Martínez, but those chances went begging. In the end, there were chants here in Buenos Aires for Emiliano ‘Dibu’ Martínez, who pulled off a fine save in the dying seconds. There’s a big cheeseburger named after him here, it should sell well tonight. It was another Martínez, Lisandro, who saved another certain goal with a superb tackle not long beforehand. So it was nervy here towards the end, but Argentina did more than enough to win, and it seemed the thousands of fans here in Buenos Aires knew it - they never seemed that concerned.

Argentina are under pressure! Chris Waugh·Newcastle United CorrespondentDecember 3, 2022 at 3:39 PM ESTGoodwin's goalAustralia have had a solitary shot on target so far - but it wasn't for their goal. Craig Goodwin did lash an effort towards goal, but it looked to be heading wide, only to take a massive deflection. It seems he has been awarded the goal, so fair enough, but it is an enormous slice of luck that suddenly gives Australia hope.
12). Argentina’s second goal came via a player who will dream of scoring as many World Cup goals as Messi; Julián Álvarez. At just 22 and with maybe three more World Cup tournaments ahead of him, the Manchester City forward has made a solid start. His strike today, after Mat Ryan’s careless error, was his second at this tournament. The last Argentine to score in his first two World Cup starts was Hernán Crespo in 2006, while the last player to do this at a younger age for any side was Spain’s Fernando Torres in the same year – not bad company to keep. Big credit goes to Australia, who unexpectedly advanced through their group at this tournament and put up a good fight tonight in a game that very few would have expected them to progress from.
